Clocks in igneous rocks
6 avril 2023 @ 11h00 – 12h00 CEST
Séminaire de Fidel Costa (Professeur à l’IPGP Paris)
Understanding the evolution and processes that shape our planet critically depends on the robustness of the absolute ages and process durations obtained from rocks and crystals. Diffusion chronometry now allows to quantify the igneous processes that occur on human timescales, and relate magmatic processes with the monitoring signals measured at a volcano’s surface. We are also now able to combine precise in situ dating of accessory minerals and diffusion chronometry on the same objects of interest. This has brought new insights into the longevity and incremental growth of large silica-rich magma reservoirs and illuminate the complex relationships between plutonic and volcanic systems. In this seminar I will present some of the basis of the methods for obtaining time information from igneous rocks and discuss a few case studies.
Le séminaire sera retransmis en zoom également.
