Public outreach

Conferences for the general public

We participate in and organize geological excursions for professionals, secondary school teachers and/or the general public in partnership with the National Nature Reserve of Geological Interest of the Lot department. @Carine Lézin, member of the scientific committee.

We are also members of the associations “Les étoiles brillent pour tous” (@Vincent Regard) and “Sciences Parlons-En!” (@Elise Nardin)

Geological walk in Toulouse

Toulouse, a city made of bricks and… many other things.
The city of Toulouse has an important built heritage resulting from a long history since the Gallo-Roman period. The position of Toulouse, a city of plains with no available building stone in its environment, will impose the building materials. This geological walk in the streets of Toulouse will be an opportunity to present the main buildings of the city in their historical context through the materials used for their construction in terms of regional geology, availability, evolution of modes and capacities of transport. The city was founded on the left bank of the Garonne and the popular suburbs occupied the left bank, this is not necessarily a coincidence. At the end of the walk, the quays of the Garonne will be the occasion to present the geomorphological context of the alluvial terraces and its consequences on the control of historical floods.

This geological walk was conceived as a fieldtrip for the International Congress of Sedimentology (IMS 2017) organized by our team. It has been, thereafter, programmed on many occasions during cultural and scientific popularization events co-organized with the CNRS d’occitane ouest, the “Science in the City” festival within the framework of “Toulouse European City of Science 2018”, the Quai des Savoirs (UFTMIP) and the Tourist Office of the City of Toulouse. Since its creation, more than 200 people have followed it. Since 2018, this walk is used as a basis for a delocalized TP for L1 SdT students at UT3 – Paul Sabatier.

Ecomuseum of marble – Caunes Minervois

For several years, our research work has led us to participate actively in the scientific committee and in the creation of the geology space of the marble ecomuseum managed by the association “Les Marbrières de Caunes”. The visit of the eco-museum can be accompanied by the discovery of the quarries, their geological and industrial history.

Caves as you have never seen them

We participate in the study of the understanding of the formation and the environmental functioning of underground caves in Occitania, remarkable from the heritage point of view (prehistoric caves of Pech Merle and Niaux, Esparros chasm). We realize in particular 3D digitizations that we use for our research works but that we also use for the communication to the general public.
