MP sizebase
MPsizeBase: An online database for microplastic concentration and particle size distribution that facilitates published data extrapolation and inter-comparison over standardized size ranges (1-10um, 1-300um, 1-5000, etc).
The CNRS MPSizeBase is an academic initiative to compile peer-reviewed scientific observations of microplastic (MP) particle size distribution (PSD) and number concentration in Earth surface environments. MPSizeBase aims to support the UNEP Plastics Treaty Secretariat and all Nations in the implementation of the Plastic Treaty and future activities related to Effectiveness Evaluations and Global Monitoring frameworks.
MPsizeBase has multiple objectives:
- Organize peer-reviewed MP concentration and particle size distribution (PSD) data in air, water, sediment, biota and soil into a single online open access database.
- Apply power law fitting to PSDs in order to allign datasets that cover variable observed MP size ranges. This facilitates published data extrapolation and inter-comparison over standardized size ranges (1-10um, 1-300um, 1-5000, etc)
- Share MP and PSD data interpretation concepts, notably data intercomparison, extrapolation beyond observed MP size, and size to mass conversion of a PSD.
Database access
- Acces to the GDrive or downloadable Xls version of the database* (download, but not modifiable). Check the READ ME section first.
How to add new data?
- Add your NEW microplastic data** to a modifiable GDrive copy of the database (we will transfer your data to the main database after validation)
- Some example datasets are shown; you can add your NEW data below this; please send us an email when you are done
- Or, add your NEW microplastic data** to a downloadable xls template (send to us by email for validation and transfer to main database)
- Consider using this template as an SI file with your future publications!
*If you use the database, please cite it as follows: « MPsizeBase, accessed online at https://www.get.omp.eu/mpsizebase/ on DD/MM/20YY »
**We only accept NEW data that is published in the peer-reviewed literature, and includes DOI, latitude, longitude, geographical location, sampling date, sample ID, PSD and MP concentration.
Do not hesitate to contact us to correct errors in the database, or to complete your own datasets
